Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI)

Verdafero Inc. has added Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) methodology to its online Utility Optimization Software Platform.

Verdafero Inc. (www.verdafero.com), based in San Francisco, CA, is a SaaS (Sustainability-as-a-Service) software and services provider to the hospitality industry that has added the new Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) methodology to its comprehensive Utility Optimization software application, thus enabling the hospitality industry to analyze and report their carbon footprint on a real-time basis.

Created by the industry and for the industry, HCMI is a methodology to calculate and report on the carbon footprint of a hotel stay, meeting, or event in a comparative analysis.

In June of 2012, the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with 23 leading global hospitality companies, launched a methodology to calculate and communicate the carbon footprint of hotel stays and meetings in a consistent and transparent way. This information is used to calculate the carbon footprint of a specific client’s use of the hotel in comparison to all properties under consideration.

It is imperative to provide the tools for hotels to understand and accurately report their carbon footprint accomplishments to meet the mandatory regulatory requirements. Verdafero’s Utility Optimization Platform helps them track, analyze, and report on all
utility expenses (electric, gas, water and waste), across multiple locations and facilities. This holistic view enables clients to compare the performance of all hotels within their portfolio.  Additionally, clients can now compare and track their entire
usage and costs, benchmarked back to an individual year with weather and occupancy normalization. This provides relevant comparisons so management can make informed decisions based on facts. Corporate clients can see cost savings of between 5-15%
per year using the Verdafero Software Platform, based on their operational policies and practices.

Working with Hotel Sustainability Solutions, Inc,( HSSI), a leading hospitality sustainability company, corporate hospitality clients are now applying Verdafero’s SaaS Platform with clearly defined results. “The implementation of the HCMI methodology is a
great addition to Verdafero’s SaaS Platform,” says Charles Smith, CEO of HSSI. “Our corporate hospitality clients, including some of the major world-wide brands, now have the tools at their fingertips to track, analyze, and report their utility usage and carbon footprint per room per night on a real-time basis, rather than as an averaged figure for the year. This is imperative for our clients to win corporate business during these challenging times.”

“Hotel managers are very busy and do not always have the time and resources necessary to analyze large amounts of data on spreadsheets and paper. Now having the ability to track, analyze, and report how a hotel uses not just energy, but all overhead utility expenses, is of vital importance for profitability and the environment,” says Dr. Alastair Hood, CEO of Verdafero Inc.
