Verdafero Taps Power of IBM Cloud for Utility Analytics Platform, Helping to Slash Utility Consumption Up to 30 Percent
Moves from traditional provider to IBM Bluemix to speed application development and delivery

ARMONK, N.Y., Sept. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Verdafero, a San Francisco-based utility analytics startup, has selected IBM Cloud to power its utility analytics platform, allowing customers to reduce their energy, water or waste consumption by up to 30 percent. Verdafero chose IBM’s open cloud platform, Bluemix, over a previously used platform, in order to significantly speed the development and delivery of more features and offerings to its users.

Verdafero helps organizations such as cities, gas stations, hotel chains, health clubs and other businesses owning multiple properties to efficiently manage utility costs and usage across all locations with the help of cloud-based analytics. Through a centralized dashboard, organizations can visualize, compare and analyze their entire electric, gas, water, waste, fuel and carbon footprints across all of their properties and usage histories. With this level of understanding of entire utility usage, Verdafero’s web platform has helped users reduce utility consumption by as much as 30 percent and ultimately cut costs.

“Switching our development to the Bluemix platform has been a game changer,” said Dr. Alastair Hood, CEO, Verdafero. “We wanted a solution that would allow our infrastructure to grow and remain secure as we expand our app into new markets and build new features. Bluemix’s user interface allows our new employees and developers to get up to speed quickly, collaborate and develop faster – and we are now turning around valuable features at a rapid pace.”

With a growing roster of clients, and aspirations to continue to expand across the United States and overseas, Verdafero shifted from their traditional provider to IBM Bluemix to increase solution scalability, security and data storage. This shift not only allowed the company to accelerate its development speed, but also provided the necessary flexibility for Verdafero to set its sights on building new features – such as making its APIs available for external developers to integrate into other, separate apps in new markets.

Powered by SoftLayer, IBM’s global cloud footprint, Bluemix enables organizations to rapidly build, deploy and manage mobile and web apps in the cloud by providing an instantly available infrastructure, as well as a “toolbox” for developers to quickly stand up their app. As one of the largest implementations of the Cloud Foundry Foundation, Bluemix – IBM’s Platform as a Service (PaaS) – combines open standards and more than 60 tools, runtimes and services in Big Data, mobile, analytics, DevOps and more from IBM and a growing number of its industry partners.

“Verdafero is the latest in a string of new clients we have seen come on board with IBM Bluemix,” said Sandy Carter, General Manager, Ecosystem Development, IBM. “With the rising cost of energy and an increased focus on sustainability, today’s organizations need a better, more comprehensive look into their utilities usage. Powered by IBM Cloud and the Bluemix platform, we’re thrilled to see Verdafero quickly building solutions that give companies this critical capability, as well as continuing to develop creative features, which will help industries lower their impact on virtually every natural resource imaginable – from solar power to water to natural gas.”

Since its launch in February, IBM has seen the rapid adoption of Bluemix by key clients and partners such as Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), Financial Insurance Management Corp (FIMC), GameStop, Pitney Bowes, Continental Automotive and start-ups including EyeQ, aPersona and MyMenu, among many others.

Hole in one for Galgorm Castle Golf Club ahead of Open

galgorm castle golf Hole in one for Galgorm Castle Golf Club ahead of OpenMaking it from tee to green just got easier for the staff at Galgorm Castle Golf Club as they announce savings of £10,000. The Club which will host this year’s NI Golf Open Challenge from 28th to 31st August has reinvested the savings into ensuring that the course is in perfect condition for the 156 players who will be battling to be named Northern Ireland Open Challenge Champion.

The forward-thinking club, one of the first in Northern Ireland to invest in an innovative wood pellet modularised heating system from BS Holdings, has reduced the clubs heating costs by 110% and its CO2 emissions by more than 50,000 kgs since April 2013.

The 99kw carbon neutral modularised heating system was supplied by BS Holdings, one of Northern Ireland’s leading providers of biomass systems, and the team also assisted Galgorm Castle Golf Club to make further savings through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which guarantees fuel payments to the Club for the next twenty years.

Gary Henry from Galgorm Castle Golf Club said: “Going green really has made sense for us not only because it helps us better protect the beautiful, natural landscape that makes us one of Northern Ireland’s leading courses, but we’ve also been able to quickly make actual cost savings that can be reinvested into the club.

Keeping our course in shape for events like the Northern Ireland Open takes time and we invest significantly in keeping our greens and fairways at their best and the savings we’ve made have allowed us to do this.”

BS Holdings installed a heating system at Galgorm Castle Golf Club’s to enable the introduction of a low temperature hot water system (LTHW) which would replace the electric heating the club had been using and the company is also supporting Galgorm Castle by sponsoring the NI Golf Open Challenge for 2014.

Brian Hood, Managing Director, BS Holdings comments, “We are delighted with the savings Galgorm Castle Golf Club has made in just over a year. They’ve fully embraced ‘going green’ because it makes business sense for them. More and more clubs, companies and organisations are tapping into renewable fuel sources such as our biomass system and it is allowing them to make almost immediate savings and reduce their impact on the environment.”

BSH 99k systems utilise biomass wood pellets that are locally produced in the UK. These pellets emit much lower net carbon emissions that conventional heat sources such as gas, heating oil or electricity. Biomass fuel has been proven to deliver significant and cost-effective carbon savings, especially in commercial and industrial organisations. As well as offering carbon savings, biomass is a secure, reliable fuel source that minimises fuel price volatility that is often experienced by oil and gas users.

2014 Insider Knowledge

Verdafero Helps UK based BS Holdings’ customers save (and make) money with the Renewable Heating Initiative.

The situation

In 2011 the UK government introduced the Renewable Heating Initiative (RHI), the first of its kind in the world. The RHI is set up to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies among householders, communities and businesses. The UK Government expects the RHI to make a significant contribution towards their 2020 ambition of having 12 per cent of heating coming from renewable sources.

“Over the last few years as we installed more and more bio-fuel heating systems across multiple clients in the UK and Ireland it became increasingly difficult to effectively monitor and track the usage and costs of the heating systems to accurately record and receive payment for carbon reductions through the newly introduced Renewable Heating Initiative (RHI).” said Eddie Allen, General Manager of BSH.

The Verdafero Solution

“As an example of how Verdafero helps us drive our business, the RHI rebate can almost cover the cost of the heating fuel for a business. Having the ability to now capture, analysis, visualize and report the usage and costs from each bio-fuel installation across multiple client sites spread across the whole of the UK without having to visit each site individually is of vital importance to our business,” said Eddie Allen, General Manager of BSH.

“We can now do this from the comfort of our computer. Up until now utility expenses have been seen as something that are fixed and a cost of doing business. Now, with the greater insight provided by Verdafero, the user and importantly BS Holdings have the data at their fingertips and can quickly and efficiently alert the customer to any potential problems, show how each installation’s operations compare to others and importantly help the customer reduce their overhead expenses. For BS Holdings we use the system to accurately calculate the RHI metrics. Being cloud-based we can use Verdafero’s platform while on the road at the customer’s site” Eddie Allen continued.

Green Hotelier, by the International Tourism Partnership, is a “leading news oulet for information on environmental and social responsibility in the hospitality industry.”

In their February 27th edition they published an article untitled “Hilton Concord San Francisco nose ahead in the sustainability competition”.

Their secret? “Real—time visibility and reporting of our sustainability has become an increasingly important part of our day-to-day hotel operations, not only in this hotel, but throughout our entire organization” reveals Jack Hlavac, General Manager of the Hilton Concord. He adds: “The result of our actions and using the MyVerdafero software, we are now able to accurately track, analyze and report our waste disposal streams, energy use, water consumption and carbon footprint at the touch of a button rather than having to employ a spreadsheet expert to try and track all these metrics manually”.

What is the problem we solved?

Capturing large amounts of utility data (electric, gas, water, waste and more) requires constant, reliable and accurate communications with multiple suppliers . Verdafero developed DataPlug™ to provide easy and automated access to the customer’s data directly from the utility’s servers. Verdafero has been using its interface with the EPA’s Energy Start Portfolio Manager’s API via DataPlug™for a number of years. With this release, Verdafero is expanding DataPlug™ to work withthe increasing number of utilities that have joined the Green Button Initiative.

How does this improve our service to our customers?

Verdafero customers are medium size organizations, generally with multiple buildings and utilities. They like our low price (less than $20 per meter per month), the comprehensive nature of our solution (not just energy), ease of use and our automatic data feed. This will allows them to enjoy automatic connections with more utilities providing them with unparalleled access and analysis on opportunities to save money on their expenses.«

Why is one facility’s utility bill twice as much as another similar facility?

facility-breakdown-2

By analyzing both cost and usage, we found the usage per square foot was the same at two different health clubs and the cost difference was due to a local arrangement. At one location electricity cost was $0.12/kwh while at the other it was $.06/kwh due to an incentive provided by the municipality. This sharpened our focus on seeking local incentives for new sites.
