In June 2009, Merc Martinelli, co-founder of Verdafero, completed licensee training to deliver the Sustainability Competency & Opportunity Rating & Evaluation (SCORE) assessment program developed by AXIS Performance Advisors. This was followed in July by training to deliver the Sustainability Planning and Reporting Kit (SPaRK) program. AXIS is a sustainability consulting firm founded in 1990 by Darcy Hitchcock and Marsha Willard. They have published several award winning books including The Business Guide to Sustainability and The Step by Step Guide to Sustainability Planning.
