"The best friend of earth of man is the tree. When we use the tree respectfully and economically, we have one of the greatest resources on the earth."
Over the years I have had the pleasure of hosting my parents, other relatives, and friends from the East Coast as my guests here in northern California. It is always fun for me to share the wonderful cultural and recreational attractions we have here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and this most recent visit from my parents was no exception. This time around we visited the newly reconstructed California Academy of Sciences, a unique institution that houses an aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum all under one roof (an amazing living roof no less!). An outstanding example of sustainable building design and construction, the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the Academy a Platinum-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for their new home.
As a member of the Academy, in addition to my membership card, I received a “Sustainability Made Simple” card that you can download for your own use as well. It gives a number of ideas and tips that you may want to consider in making everyday choices regarding transportation, dining, and home energy and water use that collectively can have a big impact on creating a more sustainable future for our planet. Although the focus of my company Verdafero is in sustainable business practices, I believe it is important to consider the day-to-day environmental impact we have at home as well.
So dear reader, what are you doing away from work to help support a sustainable future?
